As of 2014, the global pharmaceutical market represents an estimated one trillion dollar industry that has improved the health and quality of life for all humans that have access to it.  In this half-day conference, we will explore the current approach that bio-pharmaceutical firms take in identifying what drug discoveries to develop, how influential hospitals and physicians help to test and deliver those drugs to patients that need them, and how existing financing mechanisms for the drug development process have established the value that societies place on these drugs.  We will also look at how changes in the political and economic environment of the US and the rest of the world will inform how the next generation of drugs are developed, delivered, and valued.

"Selling a Business:  Specific Applications and Issues"

For decades, transferring discounted interests to younger generations in advance of a sale of the family business has been a successful strategy. But with the transfer tax exclusion now “permanently” higher, the transfer tax rate lower than many expected, and income tax rates creeping upward, could the best wealth transfer strategy for your client be no transfer at all? What key factors should drive your recommendation?  Expert-Speaker Tom Pauloski will use Bernstein’s proprietary wealth forecasting model and the case-study method to test strategic alternatives in three different contexts that are becoming more frequent topics for discussion:
·        A young entrepreneur who is planning for a second liquidity event;
·        An older shareholder of a concentrated, low-basis position in a publicly TRADED STOCK who is facing an unwanted                realization event due to an offshore “inversion” transaction; and
·        A family that has recently completed a business sale and is now looking for ways to minimize future income taxes                and maximize family wealth going forward.

RSVP:  Please contact Dyan Roppolo at (312) 696-7835, or,RSVPchi@bernstein.com
SPKR:  Tom Pauloski, J.D., National Managing Director of Bernstein’s Wealth Planning and Analysis Group and a former estate planning attorney, will discuss how to advise business owners in the current environment.  Tom works with private clients and their advisors on wealth transfer strategies, focusing on tax-efficient wealth management and asset allocation decisions. Pauloski was appointed a National Managing Director in 2009. Prior to joining the firm in 2005, he was a partner in the trusts and estates dept at Winston & Strawn LLP in Chicago. Pauloski is on the faculty of the American Bankers Assn National Trust and National Graduate Trust schools; he has also been an adjunct professor at Loyola U. Chicago School of Law and has taught estate planning classes at Northwestern U. Law School. Pauloski earned a BS in environmental engineering from Northwestern U. and a JD, magna cum laude, from Loyola U. Chicago, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Loyola Law Journal. "How Mid-Size Companies Can Win in the Talent, Innovation, and Operations Wars - New Research on Winning Companies" -with Thomas A. Stewart, Exec. Dir. of the National Center for the Middle Market.

A prominent management thought leader, he is the former Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of the Harvard Business Review, and the author of two bestselling books, Intellectual Capital:  The New Wealth of Organizations, and, The Wealth of Knowledge.
The challenge of fielding a great leadership team is greater in the middle market than it is anywhere else. Mid-sized companies stand face to face with the big guys every day—either as competitors or as suppliers and customers; they need a team every bit as good. How do you attract NBA players to a college gym? How do you keep them when others come poaching?  How do middle-market companies create a reputation—an employer brand—that allows them to compete with P&G and GE and Boeing for the best people? What weaknesses do they have to overcome—and what hidden strengths can they leverage?  Likewise, we'll see how middle market companies can effectively compete with innovation and operational effectiveness.
SPEAKER, Tom Stewart, will discuss these questions and more, calling on brand-new research conducted by the National Center for the Middle Market, the leading source of insights and data about America’s mid-sized companies.  Tom will discuss with us:
--the impact of a strong employer brand on profitability and growth
--how mid-sized companies can devise a brand and value proposition that is uniquely theirs
--what executives say motivates them to switch, or to turn down an offer
--how the best co.s turn perf mgmt into tool that drives co. perf and helps retain the best staff
--how the best companies are creating innovative work environments
--how the best companies are operating winning levels of operational efficiency
--and many other important insights

"Lord Mervyn King on the Global Financial Crisis"

Speaker:  Mervyn King, The Rt. Hon. The Lord King of Lothbury KG GBE, Former Governor of the Bank of England. Partnered event with The Chicago Council on Global Affairs:
The global financial crisis fostered a rare unity of purpose in the US and UK—as policymakers, central bankers, and economists scrambled to preserve the viability of the international financial system. While the US and UK appear well-down the path to recovery, the lingering effects of the crisis—debt, slow growth, and unemployment—threaten to become the new normal for much of Europe and the developed world. With the immediate panic subsided, has the impetus for governments to pursue wider reforms receded? Are we returning to an age of complacency and too-big-to-fail? Do the structural flaws and imbalances that precipitated the last crisis contain the seeds of the next? Join The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and Lord King, governor of the Bank of England in the depths of the crisis, for a discussion on the global financial crisis and the lessons for today’s global economy.

Our 3rd annual "Family Reunion" event is back & better than ever!
We'll have top experts discussing cyber security threats to your business, the cloud impact in the next couple years & how small businesses are growing by increasing their online presence.
Come grab lunch, learn from brilliant keynote speakers, and mingle with some exceptional peers during our happy hour! We'll even have a Microsoft device bar with the latest technology. We'd love to see you there!
Meet Our Keynote Speakers:
Brad Farris, Principal Advisor with Anchor Advisors
Brad will discuss how to grow your business and generate leads in the digital age. How has marketing changed in the digital age … and how has it stayed the same? We’ll explore some case studies to learn how leading edge businesses are finding their audience, demonstrating their expertise and winning new business today.
The best way to develop leads for any company is to be helpful. If people can see and experience what it would be like to work with you, if you demonstrate that you understand their issues and problems, they are more likely to trust you to solve those problems. But in the age of the internet the old standby marketing methods have become more complicated.
• How do we know where the audience is?
• How can we reach our audience?
• How do we attract the right audience to our website?
Jason Lambert, Cloud Technical Consultant for Microsoft
Jason will track the "cloud" storm that all businesses are headed towards. While some of us may still be trying to figure out what exactly "the cloud" is, Jason will shed light on the biggest topic in the tech industry.
• Why the cloud is a trend
• The reason businesses should want the cloud
• The impact of cloud in the next few years
Laura Post, United States Secret Service Agent
We don't have to tell you why Laura is an impressive keynote speaker...if we told you we might have to kill you (just kidding). Laura Post works in the Electronic Crimes Task Force and has years of experience analyzing trends in electronic crimes and its impact on businesses like yours.
Her eye-opening presentation is one you won't want to miss!

• Protect your personal and professional information

EVENT DETAILS:  China's leaders have set progressively lower growth targets as they grapple with the need to restructure their economy away from excessive reliance on investment and exports, and towards greater consumption. David Dollar, Senior Fellow in the China Center at Brookings and former World Bank and Treasury representative in Beijing, will discuss the economic reform program unveiled at the Third Plenum in fall 2013. What are the key reforms needed to shift the growth model? What has been the progress with reform during a year and a half of implementation?
Progress in areas such as financial liberalization has been steady, whereas fiscal and state enterprise reforms have been more difficult. Who are the key interest groups pushing for or retarding reform? Can China succeed in thoroughgoing economic reform without parallel efforts for political liberalization? In his talk and during the question-and-answer period, Mr. Dollar will address these key questions regarding China's reform prospects, the success or failure of which will have significant implications for the world economy.
SPEAKER BIO:  David Dollar, Senior fellow with the Foreign Policy and Global Economy and Development programs in the John L. Tho, Brookings Institution, http://www.brookings.edu/experts/dollard

That included the formal meetings, notably the annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue, as well as constant exchanges between the Treasury Department and Chinese economic policymakers at all levels. Based at the U.S. embassy in Beijing, Dollar served as Treasury's eyes and ears on the ground and reported back to Washington on economic and policy developments in China.
Dollar worked at the World Bank for 20 years, and from 2004 to 2009 was country director for China and Mongolia. His other World Bank assignments primarily focused on Asian economies, including South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh and India. "The Road to Character" with David Brooks

Speaker:  David Brooks, Author, Columnist, The New York Times, freq CNN / tv talk show guest...
How can we lead richer and more substantive inner lives? According to David Brooks, our culture focuses on accumulating power, material wealth, and professional achievements instead of cultivating the kinds of qualities that will be discussed at our funerals—we emphasize “resume” over “eulogy” virtues. In contrast, a person of deep character has certain qualities, from conviction about their world views to intellect and unconditional love. But how does one build these qualities? Who are the moral geniuses of history and what did they learn from the world around them? Are some cultures better at nurturing inner depth than others? Join The Chicago Council and David Brooks for a discussion on the global sources of depth and character. Brooks’ most recent book, "The Road to Character: The Humble Journey to an Excellent Life" will be available for purchase and signing from The Book Stall following the program.

"Thinking About Overseas Markets?  Think Asia, Think Hong Kong"

As Asia continues to grow in more ways and more places, US companies may benefit from identifying, even redefining, the most appropriate strategic approach for tapping extant and emerging opportunities in Asia, including the Chinese regional markets.  In their ongoing quest for international success, US businesses, especially SMEs, are finding that Hong Kong, Asia’s top international trade and financial center, is able to strengthen and even fast-track their efforts.
Organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and supported by over 30 major US business/industry associations, the "Think Asia, Think Hong Kong" symposium is the largest Hong Kong/Asia-US event ever to take place in the Midwest.  Its major objective is to encourage and facilitate US companies to diversify their business to Asia and meet potential partners or investors in a strategic, effective and efficient way. In addition to a plenary session and a networking buffet luncheon, there will also be 4 concurrent breakout sessions.  Over 100 Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese business delegates from specific sectors including food & wine, ICT, digital entertainment as well as an outbound investment group from China will be present at this event to meet and discuss trading and investment co-operation with US attendees.  One-on-one business meetings with these visiting delegates will be pre-arranged for interested attendees.

+MEMBERS' BONUS:  For those Members either doing business in Asia - China, and/or for those who want to learn more from fellow Members and other special invited expert guests, we will coordinate a networking lunch at this event.  If this concept "has legs" we will do more of these targeted topic lunches and/or dinners with Members and other experts.

"Executives Share Strategies:  How to Collect, Protect and Monetize Data"

The CFO Alliance is partnering with The CEO Roundtable-Chicago, and, the Information Governance Initiative, at Drinker Biddle, and other partners to bring you an informative session focused around assisting execs experiencing a growing pressure to govern and monetize the data collected at their company.
There has been an explosive growth of information, with the amount of data available to a company doubling every two years. This growth has put companies at an increasingly high risk to experience information-related problems that can cost the company millions of dollars. These losses continue to occur in companies with inadequate governance practices and insufficient executive involvement.
In order to counter these substantial losses, executives must further integrate information governance into their vital areas of operations, as well as increase their own role in process. It is critical to have an understanding of the knowledge needed to implement strategies to capture, protect and monetize this data, while also mitigating the risks.
Join executives from various industries to discuss potential approaches and make sure that you have the knowledge needed to implement effective information governance strategies in your business. In this Roundtable, we will not only help you mitigate the risks of data, but also help you monetize the potential that this data may have.

• Understand the risk of why a siloed approach to handling information doesn't work well
• Understand the importance of Information Governance in coordinating function between the various facets of a co.'s info
• Be able to identify the key facets of a company's information
• Understand how Information Governance is important to each stakeholder
• Understand how the interest of stakeholders can conflict, be in alignment, and think about how synergies might be created

REGISTER BY NOON ON FRIDAY, OCT. 2:  We are ALL required to submit all of the following info for each attendee:  full name as it appears on your government I.D. (drivers license), title, co. name, address, phone no., and email.
Our CEO Roundtable-Chicago Member, Navaid Abidi, has been appointed as a special advisor by the Pakistan Ambassador to the US, to facilitate strategic meetings for the PM and his trade delegation with key American business leaders.  Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, is visiting Chicago, with Penny Pritzker, US Commerce Secretary, on Oct 20th, for an investment roundtable. The goal is to facilitate meetings with key private equity investors, and "C-Level" execs from corporations who would be interested expanding presence in Pakistan, and especially those who could participate in building and modernizing the infrastructure of the country.
This exclusive event will take place at the downtown Chicago Trump Tower, from 11am to 1pm, on Tue Oct 20th.  At the event, Commerce Secretary, Penny Pritzker, will speak followed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
This visit by the PM Sharif presents significant opportunities for Chicago area companies to break into, what The Economist calls the "largest untapped market" in the world.
The GDP of Pakistan in 2014 crossed the $250B mark, and it has become the 25th largest economy by PPP.  The country is the 6th most populous nation in the world, and has the youngest population of the top 10 most populous countries. It has a large middle class of about 30-40 million people.  America is a Pakistan's largest trading partner.  However, Pakistan has a very low current private American investment and corporate participation.  This lack of American participation is principally due to the security concerns.
However, things have recently started to turn around for Pakistan on the security front.  The Pakistan Army has moved decisively against terrorists over the past year, and all violent crime is down 90%. As a comparison, over the summer of 2015, the violent crime in Pakistan's largest cities were below the respective violent crime figures in major American cities like Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit and Philadelphia.  That is really sad for Chicago, but that is another discussion.
In the past decade, Pakistan's economy has shown incredible resilience and has absorbed the shocks of global economic meltdown of 2008, cataclysmic floods of 2010, and violent extremism. Through all of that chaos, the economy has kept expanding steadily, humming along at an average of 4.5% real growth. The real estate and stock markets have shrugged all of those worries aside, and has performed incredibly well, resulting in the 2nd highest return performance among the frontier markets over the past decade.  About 98% of the country has mobile phone access, with internet access through G3 and G4 access expanding rapidly.  The country's labor market has untapped technical latent, with Pakistan having the 5th largest presence on freelance websites like eLance.com, Freelancer.com, and oDesk.com.
Pakistan is now all set for explosive growth, with estimates that range from 4%-7% GDP growth over the next decade. According to World Bank, Economist Intelligence Unit and Cap Gemini global report, Pakistan is projected to become the 14th-19th largest economy in the world the next 30 years.  Pakistan's economy is likely to outgrow the economies of almost all of the current developed countries except US, Japan, Germany, UK, France and Italy.
The biggest kickstart to this growth has come from China, which announced a $50B investment plan in the infrastructure of Pakistan.  The Pakistan-China trade and energy corridor will link the land locked Western region of China to the Indian Ocean.  China desperately needs this ocean access through Pakistan to inject economic vitality in the most underdeveloped Western regions of their country.
To accomplish its growth targets, Pakistan will need to build critical infrastructure, modernize its economy and of course create better business conditions. Pakistan faces many challenges ahead. It is energy starved, has declining freshwater resource, has poor healthcare systems, old communication infrastructure, and cannot fulfil the high demand for technical education.  Most Pakistani people are crazy about American brands.  This means there are a lot of opportunities for American companies
As an example, as part of the infrastructure build-up, just last week, China completed the first 100 MW phase of a 1000MW Quaid e Azam solar power plant in Pakistan.  Just to put this into perspective, the current largest solar power plant in the world is California's Ivanpah plant which produces 392 MW at peak capacity.  So the new solar plant will more than double the size of the largest solar power plant in the world.  However, while the Pakistan government is building the energy generation capacity, they desperately need better solutions for energy storage.
Further, if (big IF) Iran also opens up to the world, there is a further incredible opportunity for the revival of the ancient Silk Road trade corridor that links India & China region through Pakistan, to Iran, and from there to Turkey and European Markets.  If this trade route revival takes place, the rise of Pakistan's economy will take place at even a faster rate than what is currently being projected by long-term reports.
This is the time for American companies, especially in energy, infrastructure, healthcare, telecom and other sectors to look at this incredible opportunity for growth in Pakistan.   The Prime Minister is coming to the industrial heartland of America, and looking to make connections with business leaders here.  He is is eager to listen to what American business leaders have to say.
Thanks for chatting by phone today!  Again, if there is extremely high demand from CEO Roundtable members to attend, I can ask the Pakistan Consulate General for a larger block of seats.  Please let me know accordingly, but, AT LEAST BY NOON ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2.
