“Inequality in the Labor Market: Causes, Consequences, and Public Policy” - Featuring Magne Mogstad, UChicago Professor in Economics

Public debate is increasingly focused on a subject that economists have been analyzing for several decades: the causes and consequences of labor market inequality. Most popular discussion concerns the income or wealth shares of the very rich, often the top 1%. While relevant, the top 1% is only 1% of the population. In this talk, Magne Mogstad will focus on the
other 99%, answering two important questions: First, what are the key drivers of labor market inequality? Second, how is labor market inequality affected by public policy?

SCHEDULE DETAILS / AGENDA:
6:00 p.m. = Registration, Networking, Welcome Reception for all Registrants
7:00 p.m. = Presentation, Discussion, and Q & A
8:15 p.m. = Post-Reception

Featured Faculty:  Magne Mogstadis the Gary S. Becker Professor in Economics at the U. of Chicago and the director of the Ronzetti Initiative for the Study of Labor Markets at the Becker Friedman Inst. His primary research fields are labor economics, public economics, and economic inequality, and his research focuses on how to address market failures and equalize opportunities. Mogstad has published extensively in leading scholarly journals, and he is currently an editor of the Journal of Political Economy. He earned his PhD in economics from the U. of Oslo.

“Acting in the Face of Uncertainty:  A Conversation with Former Bank of England Governor Mervyn King”

Most economic evidence involves some level of uncertainty. Some uncertainties are resolvable but in the case of radical uncertainty, historical data provide no useful guidance to future outcomes and accurate forecasting is not possible. In 2000, for example, no one could have predicted the introduction of the smartphone and how many would be sold in 2020. And policymakers have repeatedly pointed to uncertainty as a key factor in the Great Recession and the slow recovery.

AGENDA
5:30-6:00 pm = Cocktails & Networking
6:00-7:15 pm = Program, Including Q&A

REGISTER:  The last registration question is “How did you hear about this event?”  Please insert in the answer box:  “CEO Roundtable” https://bfi.formstack.com/forms/conversation_with_mervyn_king

Join former Bank of England Governor Mervyn King as he shares insights from his new book, Radical Uncertainty. King will be joined by UChicago Booth Professor Anil Kashyap to discuss the real-world implications of radical uncertainty on policy and business decision-making around the world. Some of the topics they will discuss will include what can we expect from post-Brexit Britain? How will the coronavirus epidemic impact the global economy? How should we manage uncertainties? The Chicago Tribune’s Gail MarksJarvis will moderate the conversation and direct a question and answer session with the audience.

Copies of Radical Uncertainty will be available for sale during the event.
With thanks to the Union League Club of Chicago for the generous use of their space

Speakers:
Anil Kashyap:  Stevens Distinguished Service Professor of Economics and Finance, Booth School of Business

Mervyn King:  Former Governor, Bank of England; Professor of Economics and Law, New York University Stern School of Business

"Morality in Foreign Policy"

with renowned international relations scholar, Joseph S. Nye Jr., University Distinguished Service Professor

and former Dean, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138

Presidents and their foreign policies are constantly subjected to moral judgments, but to what extent do ethical considerations actually guide policy making? To answer this question, renowned international relations scholar Joseph S. Nye assessed the foreign policies of each United States president from FDR to Trump on three ethical dimensions—their intentions, the means they used, and the consequences of their decision—and joins Juliet Sorensen for a conversation on his findings. What ethical quandaries did these presidents face, and could the reemergence of a great power rivalry and a host of complex, transnational threats complicate these questions for whoever wins the 2020 election?  Copies of Joseph S. Nye Jr.’s latest book, "Do Morals Matter? Presidents and Foreign Policy from FDR to Trump" will be available for purchase and signing from the Book Cellar.

"A New Era of US - China Competition"

Oriana Skylar Mastro, Assistant Professor of Security Studies, Georgetown U. and Resident Scholar, American Enterprise Institute; In conversation
with Ivo H. Daalder, President, Chicago Council on Global Affairs

Although the United States and China are set to sign a phase one trade deal in Washington, DC tomorrow, competition will continue to intensify between the two superpowers in 2020. Hong Kong, Taiwan, the South China Sea, and 5G are all areas of clear divergence between Washington and Beijing that could be magnified as the US election approaches. How is China’s rising power and confidence altering America's global outlook? Council president Ivo Daalder and Asia-Pacific security expert Oriana Skylar Mastro consider the US-China rivalry in 2020.

“US – Iran Conflict:  Prospects for De-Escalation”

With Kelly Magsamen, Vice President, National Security and International Policy, Center for American Progress

While the US-Iran relationship has been strained for the past 40 years, tensions sharply escalated after a US drone strike killed Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani earlier this month. Iran’s response, targeting two American bases in Iraq with missile strikes resulting in no US casualties, was seen by some as Tehran opening the door to de-escalation. Yet, the potential for further retaliations, as well as the unresolved status of Iran’s nuclear program, could trigger significant economic and political effects with serious security implications for the United States and its allies. Join Kelly Magsamen, National Security Council director for Iran under Presidents George W. Bush
and Barack Obama, to discuss America’s policy options for Iran going forward.

According to Binyamin Appelbaum, before the 1960s, American politicians had never paid much attention to economists. But as the post-World War II boom began to sputter, economists gained influence and power. In his book, Appelbaum traces the rise of the economists, first in the United States and then around the globe, as their ideas reshaped the modern world.

“The Presidency and the Bomb”

For 75 years, presidents have stared into the abyss of nuclear war, able to destroy the world with a single command. Several of them have faced crisis in which they’ve thought about, threatened, broached, and in a few cases just barely averted this catastrophe. For his latest book, The Bomb, Fred Kaplan has held exclusive interviews with participants and excavated archives uncovering thousands of once-classified documents relating to these crises and maneuverings. He will share previously untold stories from inside the White
House, the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s “tank” in the Pentagon, and the vast chambers of US Strategic Command to cast new light on the darkest aspect of our age, from Truman to
Trump.  Copies of Fred’s latest book, The Bomb: Presidents, Generals, and the Secret History of Nuclear War will be available for sale and signing from the Book Cellar.

Fred Kaplan  @fmkaplan  Author and National Security Correspondent, Slate.  Fred Kaplan is the national security columnist for Slate and the author of five previous books, Dark Territory: The Secret History of Cyber War, 1959, Daydream Believers, The Wizards of Armageddon, and The Insurgents: David Petraeus and the Plot to Change the American Way of War, which was a
Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times bestseller. Previously, Kaplan was reporter for the Boston Globe, where he was bureau chief for Moscow and New York. He holds a
bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and master’s and PhD from MIT.

Ivo H. Daalder  @IvoHDaalder  President, Chicago Council on Global Affairs.  He served as the US ambassador to NATO from 2009-2013. Prior to his appointment as ambassador to NATO by President Obama, Daalder was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution, specializing in American foreign policy, European security and transatlantic relations, and national security affairs. Before joining Brookings in 1998, he was an associate professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy and director of research at its Center for International and Security Studies. He also served as director for European affairs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council staff from 1995-97. Ambassador Daalder is the author and editor of 10 books and is a frequent contributor to the opinion pages of the world’s leading newspapers, and a regular commentator on international affairs on television and radio. "A Meeting of the Minds:  Why We Disagree"

Why is there so much disagreement in the world? Is all of it due to irrationality?
Or is it possible for rational people to disagree—even after people have laid out the reasons for their beliefs?

We will discuss these and other important questions at, Why We Disagree.  Speakers are professors Emir Kamenica and Ginger Schultheis. The conversation will be moderated by Marion Brooks.  This event is the third in a new discussion series co-hosted by Chicago Booth and the Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge at the University of Chicago.

“Election 2020 and the Pulse of the Heartland”

Home to the Iowa caucuses and a host of critical swing states, the Midwest is poised to play a defining role in the 2020 presidential election. forces—tariffs, immigration, climate change—motivate voters, or will local concerns and controversies influence the result? One week after the Iowa caucuses,
analysts from across the region convene to take the election-year pulse of the heartland.  Copies of Robert Leonard’s latest book Deep Midwest:

“Will the Coronavirus Derail the Global Economy?”

The coronavirus outbreak has already had immense implications for the Chinese and global economies, with supply chains disrupted across Asia. Chinese tourist numbers are now falling sharply as China bars its citizens from group tours abroad, and many countries refuse or restrict the entry of Chinese people. Furthermore, Chinese energy executives are projecting that
the country’s oil consumption will plunge by 25 percent this month as industrial activity and travel continue to shut down. As of mid-February,
the virus has infected more than 44,653 people worldwide and caused more than 1,113 deaths primarily in China.

On February 20, the Becker Friedman Institute will host a panel of leading experts to discuss the repercussions of the crisis, including potential health and economic implications as the coronavirus continues to spread globally. The panel will feature Chang-Tai Hsieh, Professor of Economics at Chicago Booth and a faculty director of BFI-China; Yanzhong Huang, Director of Seton Hall’s Center for Global Health Studies and Senior Fellow for Global Health at the Council on Foreign Relations; and Emily Landon, Associate Professor of Medicine and Executive Medical Director

=======================================================================================================================================================

Th, Feb 27, 10:00 – 11:00 am, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WEBINAR:  Kepner-Tregoe (= Past Super Speakers for us on "Decision Making.").  View live, or after, on demand.

"How to Close the Gap Between Strategy Formulation and Execution"

Leaders need to control their destiny and invest wisely for the future. If “why have a strategy?” had to be answered in one word, that word would be “focus”. In addition to guiding daily decision making and channeling the allocation of resources, a strategy establishes an organization’s identity and serves as the backbone of its culture. In this webinar, Leo and Drew will provide ideas and recommendations to close the ever-present gap between strategy formulation and execution.

In the webinar you will:
. Review why many strategies are never executed and identify several implementation gaps that regularly occur in organizations.
. Learn processes and tools that you can use to formulate and effectively implement your business strategy across the whole organization or within a business unit or division.
. Understand why it is important to identify who is going to do what, when, and how
. Learn how to develop leading indicators to know when we are on track
. Develop a process to best prioritize projects for resource allocation, and define how we will hold people accountable

Regardless of your current position in your organization, this webinar will provide thoughts and ideas that you can implement to assist in the successful execution of your organization or divisional business strategy.

“Chicago Council on Global Affairs Open House”

Our many great friends for many years at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and The CEO Roundtable-Chicago share many of the same concerns that affect the world, and the world of business. We both care about what’s happening and think it’s important for the United States to play an active role in global affairs. The CEO Roundtable encourages you to be part of both communities of Chicagoans who want to explore the issues that will shape our global future.
