EVENT DETAILS:  China's leaders have set progressively lower growth targets as they grapple with the need to restructure their economy away from excessive reliance on investment and exports, and towards greater consumption. David Dollar, Senior Fellow in the China Center at Brookings and former World Bank and Treasury representative in Beijing, will discuss the economic reform program unveiled at the Third Plenum in fall 2013. What are the key reforms needed to shift the growth model? What has been the progress with reform during a year and a half of implementation?
Progress in areas such as financial liberalization has been steady, whereas fiscal and state enterprise reforms have been more difficult. Who are the key interest groups pushing for or retarding reform? Can China succeed in thoroughgoing economic reform without parallel efforts for political liberalization? In his talk and during the question-and-answer period, Mr. Dollar will address these key questions regarding China's reform prospects, the success or failure of which will have significant implications for the world economy.

David Dollar is a senior fellow with the Foreign Policy and Global Economy and Development programs in the John L. Thornton China Center. He is a leading expert on China's economy and U.S.-China economic relations. From 2009 to 2013 he was the U.S. Treasury's economic and financial emissary to China.
In that capacity he facilitated the economic and financial policy dialogue between the U.S. and China. That included the formal meetings, notably the annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue, as well as constant exchanges between the Treasury Department and Chinese economic policymakers at all levels. Based at the U.S. embassy in Beijing, Dollar served as Treasury's eyes and ears on the ground and reported back to Washington on economic and policy developments in China.
Dollar worked at the World Bank for 20 years, and from 2004 to 2009 was country director for China and Mongolia. His other World Bank assignments primarily focused on Asian economies, including South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh and India. From 1995 to 2004, Dollar worked in the World Bank's research department.
Prior to his World Bank career, Dollar was an assistant professor of economics at UCLA, spending a semester in Beijing teaching at the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He has a Ph.D. in economics from New York University and a B.A. in Chinese history and language from Dartmouth College. He has written extensively about economic reform in China, globalization and economic growth.

Our CEO Roundtable-Chicago Member, Navaid Abidi, has been appointed as a special advisor by the Pakistan Ambassador to the US, to facilitate strategic meetings for the PM and his trade delegation with key American business leaders.  Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, is visiting Chicago, with Penny Pritzker, US Commerce Secretary, on Oct 20th, for an investment roundtable. The goal is to facilitate meetings with key private equity investors, and "C-Level" execs from corporations who would be interested expanding presence in Pakistan, and especially those who could participate in building and modernizing the infrastructure of the country.
This exclusive event will take place at the downtown Chicago Trump Tower, from 11am to 1pm, on Tue Oct 20th.  At the event, Commerce Secretary, Penny Pritzker, will speak followed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.  
This visit by the PM Sharif presents significant opportunities for Chicago area companies to break into, what The Economist calls the "largest untapped market" in the world.  
The GDP of Pakistan in 2014 crossed the $250B mark, and it has become the 25th largest economy by PPP.  The country is the 6th most populous nation in the world, and has the youngest population of the top 10 most populous countries. It has a large middle class of about 30-40 million people.  America is a Pakistan's largest trading partner.  However, Pakistan has a very low current private American investment and corporate participation.  This lack of American participation is principally due to the security concerns.  
However, things have recently started to turn around for Pakistan on the security front.  The Pakistan Army has moved decisively against terrorists over the past year, and all violent crime is down 90%. As a comparison, over the summer of 2015, the violent crime in Pakistan's largest cities were below the respective violent crime figures in major American cities like Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit and Philadelphia.  That is really sad for Chicago, but that is another discussion.
In the past decade, Pakistan's economy has shown incredible resilience and has absorbed the shocks of global economic meltdown of 2008, cataclysmic floods of 2010, and violent extremism. Through all of that chaos, the economy has kept expanding steadily, humming along at an average of 4.5% real growth. The real estate and stock markets have shrugged all of those worries aside, and has performed incredibly well, resulting in the 2nd highest return performance among the frontier markets over the past decade.  About 98% of the country has mobile phone access, with internet access through G3 and G4 access expanding rapidly.  The country's labor market has untapped technical latent, with Pakistan having the 5th largest presence on freelance websites like eLance.com, Freelancer.com, and oDesk.com. 
Pakistan is now all set for explosive growth, with estimates that range from 4%-7% GDP growth over the next decade. According to World Bank, Economist Intelligence Unit and Cap Gemini global report, Pakistan is projected to become the 14th-19th largest economy in the world the next 30 years.  Pakistan's economy is likely to outgrow the economies of almost all of the current developed countries except US, Japan, Germany, UK, France and Italy.
The biggest kickstart to this growth has come from China, which announced a $50B investment plan in the infrastructure of Pakistan.  The Pakistan-China trade and energy corridor will link the land locked Western region of China to the Indian Ocean.  China desperately needs this ocean access through Pakistan to inject economic vitality in the most underdeveloped Western regions of their country.
To accomplish its growth targets, Pakistan will need to build critical infrastructure, modernize its economy and of course create better business conditions. Pakistan faces many challenges ahead. It is energy starved, has declining freshwater resource, has poor healthcare systems, old communication infrastructure, and cannot fulfil the high demand for technical education.  Most Pakistani people are crazy about American brands.  This means there are a lot of opportunities for American companies
As an example, as part of the infrastructure build-up, just last week, China completed the first 100 MW phase of a 1000MW Quaid e Azam solar power plant in Pakistan.  Just to put this into perspective, the current largest solar power plant in the world is California's Ivanpah plant which produces 392 MW at peak capacity.  So the new solar plant will more than double the size of the largest solar power plant in the world.  However, while the Pakistan government is building the energy generation capacity, they desperately need better solutions for energy storage. 
Further, if (big IF) Iran also opens up to the world, there is a further incredible opportunity for the revival of the ancient Silk Road trade corridor that links India & China region through Pakistan, to Iran, and from there to Turkey and European Markets.  If this trade route revival takes place, the rise of Pakistan's economy will take place at even a faster rate than what is currently being projected by long-term reports.
This is the time for American companies, especially in energy, infrastructure, healthcare, telecom and other sectors to look at this incredible opportunity for growth in Pakistan.   The Prime Minister is coming to the industrial heartland of America, and looking to make connections with business leaders here.  He is is eager to listen to what American business leaders have to say.
