PROGRAM:  Our security, freedoms, and everyday life are deeply impacted by institutions. Yet Americans feel that many of our vital institutions fall short on standards of competence, efficiency, or fiscal prudence. How can we bring about meaningful change? What does leadership mean? These issues are particularly relevant in light of the upcoming presidential election. Having led change successfully at colossal organizations such as the CIA and the Department of Defense, Secretary Gates offers us the ultimate insider’s look at how major organizations can be transformed. In this special members-only program, Secretary Gates will provide a characteristically direct, informed, and urgent assessment of why big institutions are failing us and how smart, committed leadership can affect real improvement. His latest book, A Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform From Fifty Years of Public Service, will be available for purchase and signing from the Book Cellar following the program.

BIO:  The Honorable Robert M. Gates served as the U.S. secretary of defense from 2006 to 2011. He is currently serving as chancellor of the College of William & Mary, and was previously president at Texas A&M University. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and worked for the C.I.A. before being appointed director of the agency by President George H. W. Bush. He was a member of the National Security Council staff in four administrations and served eight presidents of both political parties. Gates holds a BA from the College of William & Mary, an MA from Indiana University, and a PhD from Georgetown University.

Dearborn St., 24th flr., Chicago.  Don’t miss this opportunity to join fellow Members and our 2016 Monthly Dinner Meetings Host and our expert / presenters this month, Seyfarth Shaw Law Firm at 131 S. Dearborn St., 24th flr., Chicago.  (dinner mtg #266 since 1991).

“The New Definition of 'Employee' - It's Impact on Your H/R and Operating Strategies, Profits, and Legal Risks"

  • Do you use an outside contractor to clean your facility, deliver your product or provide temporary staffing help?
  • Have you outsourced any part of your business to a third party provider?
  • Do you use consultants or contractors who are not your employees?

SPEAKERS from Seyfarth:  Mr. Kyle Hartman, Matt Hafter, Scott Humphrey, Jennifer Kraft, Ms. Kyle Peterson

Recent decisions from the National Labor Relations Board, as well as the positions of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Department of Labor have expanded the definition of “joint employer” in ways that may have dramatic and long-lasting impacts on these and other common business relationships.  This expansion may expose businesses to unexpected vicarious liability for employees of their contractors and business partners. This ever-changing landscape brought on by the expanded definition affects both unionized and non-union companies alike.

This interactive discussion will be led by a cross-department panel of some of Seyfarth’s most noted leaders, speakers and authors on these issues.

Topics covered at this guided discussion will include:
·         Broadening of joint employer status by the EEOC and the DOL
·         The ramifications of the NLRB’s recent decision in Browning-Ferris and other pending cases before the NLRB
·         Effects and liabilities under other federal statutes, including ERISA
·         Considerations for non-compete and other protective actions in business partners agreements
·         Other measures employers should implement now to minimize risk and potential exposure from affected business relationships
