A graduate of Harvard College, Rollert earned his JD from Yale Law School and a PhD from The John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Since 2005, he has taught courses at Harvard in ethics, politics, and leadership.

His chief responsibilities include analyzing the current performance of both the Midwest economy and the manufacturing sector for use in monetary policy.  He organizes the Bank's Economic Outlook Symposium and Automotive Outlook Symposium. In addition, he conducts industrial and manufacturing roundtables throughout the year.  
Strauss has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Loyola University Chicago and Webster University in Chicago. He currently teaches at DePaul University Kellstadt Graduate School of Business, and at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. At the latter institution, he was named winner of the 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award in the Business and Professional Programs.

Speaker BIO:  Ryan James Boyle, VP & Senior Economist at Northern Trust, Booth ’08; Ryan travels the globe speaking for Northern Trust.  He is positioned within the Global Risk Management division of Northern Trust. In this role, Ryan is responsible for briefing clients and partners on the economy and business conditions, supporting internal stress testing and capital allocation processes, and publishing economic commentaries.
Prior to joining Northern Trust, Ryan held multiple management roles at TransUnion. He researched and reported on trends and key topics in the consumer credit industry, and he led initiatives to improve the breadth, depth, and quality of data reported on consumer files. According to a recent book by Tom Ginsburg and Aziz Z. Huq, How to Save a Constitutional Democracy (UChicago Press, 2018), we can no longer afford to be complacent about democracy in the United States. Drawing on a rich array of other countries’ experiences with democratic backsliding, the authors mount an urgent argument to show how

constitutional rules can either hinder or hasten the decline of democratic institutions. The checks and balances of the federal government, a robust civil society and media, and individual rights—such as those enshrined in the First Amendment—do not necessarily succeed as bulwarks against democratic decline. Rather, the Constitution’s design may make democratic erosion more likely. But we—and the rest of the world—can do better. Join Ginsburg and Huq to explore practical steps for how laws and constitutional design can play a more positive role in managing the risk of democratic decline.

Two Speakers:  Aziz Huq is the Frank and Bernice J. Greenberg Professor of Law at the University of Chicago. His scholarship focuses on how constitutional design influences individual rights and liberties. It has appeared in leading law reviews, including flagship journals at Yale; Harvard; Stanford; Columbia University; the University of Chicago; the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Pennsylvania; the University of Michigan; Duke University; the University of Virginia; Northwestern; Vanderbilt University; and the University of Texas at Austin. He has also published in leading peer-reviewed journals in empirical legal studies, criminology, and social psychology. Recent pieces have won the Junior Scholars Paper Competition Award in Criminal Law from the Association of American Law Schools and have been selected for the Harvard/Stanford/Yale Junior Faculty Forum. In 2015 Huq received the Graduating Students Award for Teaching Excellence. He clerked for Judge Robert D. Sack of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and then for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the US Supreme Court. Before teaching, he led the Brennan Center’s Liberty and National Security Program and was a senior consultant analyst for the International Crisis Group.

Tom Ginsburg focuses on comparative and international law from an interdisciplinary perspective. He holds BA, JD, and PhD degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to How to Save a Constitutional Democracy, his books include Judicial Review in New Democracies (Cambridge University Press, 2003), which won the C. Herman Pritchett Award from the American Political Science Association (APSA); The Endurance of National Constitutions(Cambridge University Press, 2009), which also won a best book prize from APSA; and Judicial Reputation (University of Chicago Press, 2015). Ginsburg currently co-directs the Comparative Constitutions Project, an effort funded by the National Science Foundation to gather and analyze the constitutions of all independent nation-states since 1789. Before entering law teaching, he served as a legal adviser at the Iran-US Claims Tribunal in The Hague, and he continues to work with numerous international development agencies and foreign governments on legal and constitutional reform. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is one of only five women Republican Senators and is considered by many to be a key leader for forging compromise. Senator Murkowski has time and again made headlines for key votes on everything from healthcare to climate policy.  Join fellow CEO Roundtable-Chicago Members, the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics (BFI) and the Energy Policy Institute at UChicago (EPIC) for a moderated conversation with Senator Murkowski on issues facing the US economy and the environment. As Chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Murkowski sits at the forefront of crucial decisions around the future of energy and environment policy in the United States on issues from the Green New Deal to oil and gas development on federal lands. "Challenges and Opportunities of Behavioral Science in Business"

Behavioral teams have proliferated thru the private sector, from small consulting shops to major corporations like Walmart and Pepsi Co. Steve Wendel will present results from the largest survey of behavioral teams in the world, which he recently conducted with the Behavioral Science Policy Assn. He'll share an overview of how behavioral science is being applied, the landscape of job opportunities, and the key challenges these teams face.  Space is limited and registration is required.

SPEAKER:  Dr. Steve Wendel is a behavioral social scientist who studies how digital products can help individuals manage their money more effectively. He currently serves as the Head of Behavioral Science at Morningstar, a leading provider of independent investment research. At Morningstar, he leads a team of behavioral scientists and practitioners to conduct original research on savings and investing behavior, applies behavioral insights to Morningstar’s products and services, and frequently speaks with the media and industry groups on these topics.
Wendel is the author of two books on applied behavioral science. In his first book, Designing for Behavior Change (2013), he gives step-by-step instructions on how to develop products that help users take action: from exercising more to learning a new language. In his second book,  Improving Employee Benefits (2014), Wendel examines why employees fail to use their benefits and how behavioral economics can help.He is also the Founder and Chair of the nonprofit Action Design Network, which helps over 10,000 practitioners apply behavioral science research to product development through an annual conference and monthly events in ten cities across the United States.
Wendel holds a BA from UC Berkeley, a Master’s from Johns Hopkins-SAIS, and a PhD from the University of Maryland, where he analyzed the dynamics of behavioral change over time.

John Paul Rollert's teaching and research (Booth Assistant Adjunct Professor) focus on the intellectual history of capitalism, the ethics of leadership, and the application of empathy to law, business, and politics. He is also interested in the political economy and moral philosophy of Adam Smith.
A graduate of Harvard College, Rollert earned his JD from Yale Law School and a PhD from The John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Since 2005, he has taught courses at Harvard in ethics, politics, and leadership.
